For this project we were told to do a scratch board drawing using texture and movement. I chose to do a drawing of a young girl on a swing showing the texture on her surroundings and the movement on her hair. The meaning behind this would show how the years go by so fast, as i am now a senior and having to think of what my future and this drawing shows how this young girl is enjoying her life and enjoying being young while she has so much ahead of her.
I used texture throughout this piece in the girls surroundings. I added texture in the grass, in the trees, and in the fence. I also added texture in the fabric of the young girl's dress by adding different values. I tried to balance my artwork by not letting there be too much blank space. That is why i decided to add the trees, one being off to the distance and the other being more up close. I added the movement in this piece through the girl's hair as its blowing through the wind. I think i could have improve this if i were to have left a bit more black in the sky like i did to the left. I feel like i kind of got carried away scratching off the black and didn't think to leave a little more black to show more values on the sky. I demonstrated a wide range of values in the girl's body and in the tree. I also tried to add some values in the grass and in the sky.

For my self portrait i decided to do a zombie look using only pencils. Throughout this project i used a lot of values. On half of my face where the skin appears to be peeled off i decided to go darker than the rest of my face but still add highlights to show where the light is hitting and to show the texture of the blood and tissue underneath. One part where i think depth was portrayed the best is in the hoodie where the cloth is being folded. I think the range in values and the shadows of the hood-laces are what really brought the depth together making it seem realistic. I chose this portrait style because i wanted to use the peeled skin on the face to show texture and pull what i have learned throughout the semester into this piece. I was able to show how i could go darker in some areas and also be able to add highlights. I think that the most important aesthetic quality of this piece is the wound on the face because it adds a darker contrast to the other half of the face and it catches your attention. I think this piece uses a good source of light in adding the different shadows. Movement was shown through the way the hair is drawn. I think this piece was a success because i incorporated different values and textures to bring the piece together and also because it looks realistic.
For my final sketch i decided on the zombie portrait. I felt that this was the better option because i can use so many values throughout this piece and i can be able get in some texture as well.
For my self portrait i had to sketchout an idea with an expressive face, a zombie face, and a mechanical face. For my final piece i had to decide between either one of the three and i ended up choosing the zombie portrait idea.
For this part of the portrait project we were given an image of a skull as well as tracing paper. Then we were assigned to draw a portrait of ourselves, using the skull as a template or guide of our face. The part i found difficult was getting the shape of my eyes to look like my own. I also found it difficult to show value on the face since i didnt want to go too dark and i didnt know where exactly i was supposed to show the darker values.
During these practice drawings we were shown how to correctly draw an eye, a nose, a mouth, and an ear by watching video tutorials. The part i found challenging was getting those mid gray values and so i had to keep going darker in some areas to show depth and contrast.
For this practice activity we had to search through magazines and cut out different facial features. Then we were told to draw those features out in our sketchbooks. I think the only challenge i found was getting the right angles in which to draw them as well as drawing the right texture of the skin.
I think my craftsmanship for this project was okay. I feel like i went too dark too fast so when i added other colors i couldnt get a neat blend since there was already too much wax on the paper. For this piece i decided to use a light tan color for my background. I feel like it was a good choice of background because i was using light yellows and some light browns in this piece so by using this background it helped unify the lighter colors together. Throughout this piece i stuck to using primary colors. I decided to use these colors because it gives a sense of "kids" toys which are usually found in primary colors. I created contrast in this piece by adding dark shadows to each piece. I also did this by adding a dark wood grain to the background to contrast the white of the plastic. I used the texture in the background to enhance the solid textures of the plastic spheres. I used highlights to emphasize the brighter areas where the light hits the plastic. I used shadows in this piece to create depth in each object and also to show the roundness of the toy capsules. Like i previously mentioned i chose a medium dark background so that the objects stick out more and it makes the white in the highlights pop out. It is important to understand prismacolor pencils in knowing which colors to add to make an object pop out (adding purples and blues where you dont expect them). Techniques are also important to know when trying to acquire a successful piece so that you know how to create depth and to show realism. Some difficulties i had in this piece was in the plastic of the smiley toy. I didnt know how to create the plastic so that it looked that the toy was in the bag. I also had trouble blending the interior of the blue capsule since there was so much wax built up on it already. I improved my drawing from what i was told during the critique which was adding darker shadows under the objects as well as adding darker values to the capsules themselves. I could also probably go back and add some more values and thicknesses to the wood grain since they seem to look too thin and not that realistic.
For this drawing we had to pick out a piece of candy and draw it on colored paper. I chose a Kit Kat and chose to do it on a brown paper. I chose brown because most of the colors on the Kit Kat bar are brown and since i wasnt planning on adding a background i thought it would look best with a brown background. For the Dum Dum drawing we had to pick out a Dum Dum that we wanted to draw out. I ended up choosing a watermelon Dum Dum because its one of my favorite flavors. For this candy drawing i also chose a brown background because i thought the colors would be better on a brown paper than it would on a black paper. For this chalk pastel drawing we started off by practicing how to use chalk pastels and learning new techniques. i found it difficult to blend out the colors and make it look smooth.
For this project we learned how to draw in perspective. These are some examples of a one point, two point, and three point perspectives of buildings on a street. We also had some practice with prismacolors. For my final sketch i decided to do legos. I sketched out three different perspectives of legos and then chose the one that i liked out of the three. My point of view is interesting because of the way that each individual Lego is facing a different direction. I think that this project is successful in how the legos turned out. I was having a hard time getting the proportions and the overall figure of each Lego but i think now that i have added dimension to each one i feel like that really brought the piece together. For my view it was really important to know and understand perspective drawing because if a line is not how its supposed to be, it butchers the entire look of the Lego. The colored pencil exercises played an important role to this project in helping me decide what colored paper would work best for my color choices. It also helped me get outside of my comfort zone and forcing me to try colored pencils instead of going straight to graphite. The technique that i used in this project was layering colors and blending them out. Because legos tend to have a shiny exterior, i had to incorporate the colors of the legos next to each to show reflection. I think that i was able to show a foreground, middle ground, and a background in the placement of the legos. You can see the blue Lego in the foreground, the green and yellow legos in the middle ground, and the white Lego in the background. Some obstacles that i encountered in this project include being able to really show the reflections of the surrounding legos. Because i dont really have much experience with color i have trouble knowing what colors to add that are not usually seen so i tend to just use different shades of the color being used to create the illusion of depth. An advantage would be being able to layer and blend using prismacolor. I think i have gotten better with using colored pencils and i can see myself doing more drawings in color. I feel like i was well prepared for this project but i feel like we could have spent a little more time on learning what colors can be added to an object that one wouldnt think of adding to make it more realistic.
